The TOEFL is a standardized test that measures a person’s knowledge of the English language. Generally, TOEFL exams are taken by anyone who wants to attend university or graduate school abroad. Various universities consider the scores obtained in the TOEFL during their admission processes. Anyone who has completed the 10+2 level of study from any recognised educational institution is eligible to take the TOEFL exam. The test measures one’s expertise in reading, writing, communicating and listening in English.
The TOEFL Reading section is used to determine how effectively a candidate can read and comprehend academic topics. The TOEFL listening portion assesses a candidate’s ability to comprehend English conversations and lectures. It includes paying attention to basic comprehension, pragmatic understanding (speaker’s attitude and level of conviction), and connecting and synthesising data. The TOEFL speaking portion assesses a candidate’s ability to communicate effectively in English to various contexts. It consists of four exercises that are modelled after real-life events that one might encounter in and out of the classroom. The TOEFL writing section is intended to assess a candidate’s ability to write in English in an academic setting, and the ability to communicate thoughts in a clear and well-organized manner.
